Before the knife attack, the slain Florida mom posted a haunting message featuring Taylor Swift lyrics.
Police say that Catherine Griffith, 39, was stabbed during a confrontation with her 17-year-old son.
On Sunday, a 17-year-old son in Florida allegedly fatally stabbed his mother, who posted lyrics from Taylor Swift's song "It's Time to Go" as a chilling final message online just hours before she died.
The day before she was killed in a vicious knife attack in Auburndale, Catherine Griffith, 39, uploaded an image of a remote footbridge leading into a forest captioned with the lyrics to the song.
According to witnesses, the woman and her son, who has a history of mental health problems, got into an argument outside her grandmother's home. He then dragged her by the hair into the residence, and she pleaded with him to let her go, the Polk County Sheriff's Office stated.
The teenager has been accused of first-degree murder, kidnapping, and violating a no-contact order. The local attorney general's office has not yet commented on the matter, stating that they will provide an update next week.
Griffith's post hinted at her struggles before her death.
"The same old body ache, the snaps from the same little breaks in your soul," the Taylor Swift lyrics read. "You know when it’s time to go … Sometimes, giving up is the strong thing."
Griffith's Instagram page showcases pictures of joyful moments with her son, such as their cruise, July 4 celebration at the U.S. Capitol, and a graduation photo with her son in academic attire.
Another photo depicts him seated on the front of a 2024 Volkswagen Jetta, which Griffith states was an early graduation present for her son.
But the relationship between the pair was apparently not always smooth sailing.
The grandmother of the teen, who was absent during the conflict, informed WFLA that the teen had frequently been confrontational with his mother through verbal and physical means.
As investigators delved deeper into the case, they discovered that the incident was not an isolated occurrence. The teen's father had also passed away by his own hand last year.
"On Valentine's Day in 2023, in Lincoln County, Oklahoma, Judd stated that his dad threatened him with a knife, and he shot and killed him in self-defense."
Judd stated that Oklahoma authorities dropped charges against the teen less than a month after the shooting due to their inability to disprove his claim of self-defense.
The teen, who was bailed out of jail by his mother for $50,000, was later involuntarily committed to a hospital for mental health reasons within a month of moving into his mother's home in Charlotte County, Florida.
Judd stated that he made a threatening statement around this time, saying, "I'll either kill myself or my mother by shooting or stabbing her."
In November 2023, the teenager pushed his mother to the ground and stomped on her after she took away his video game privileges, according to Judd. Despite claiming self-defense, he was arrested and the argument failed, resulting in his spending time behind bars, the sheriff said.
In February of this year, the teen left his mother's house and went to his grandmother's house in Auburndale after another argument. Both his mother and grandmother contacted the sheriff's office, stating that they felt unsafe around him. As a result, the teen was handed over to family services.
Despite making more threats to kill his mother, the teen was ultimately reunited with his family just two weeks later, Judd said.
On Sept. 6, the teen had an argument with his mother about home chores, which led him to flee from his mother's house and go to his grandmother's house. The next day, the suspect's mother drove to the grandmother's house, resulting in an altercation that cost her life.
On Sunday, the teen reported to 911 dispatchers that his mother had "fallen into a knife" following a "prolonged argument," according to Judd.
Judd stated that the deputies who arrived at The Hamptons, a 55-and-older community in Auburndale, found the teen "calm, cool, and collected" with blood on him.
The 17-year-old reportedly became uncooperative, showed zero remorse, and had no sense of urgency about his gravely wounded mom.
Judd stated, "I know my rights and I want an attorney."
Despite the teen's claims of a prolonged argument with his mother prior to her passing, the house was "tidy and immaculate," Judd stated.
"When you look at this, you see a kid," Judd said. "When I look at him, I see a psychopath. His behavior is completely erratic, and at 17 years old, he has already shot and killed his father and gotten away with it, as well as stabbed his mother in the neck so hard that the knife went all the way through."
Judd stated that he was certain, beyond any reasonable doubt, that if his grandmother had crossed him and he had lived with her, she would have been the next victim.
