Before the Georgia school shooter called to warn teachers, his mother claims that they had already noticed red flags.
Nearly a week prior, Marcee Gray contacted the outlet regarding inpatient treatment at the high school.
The mother of the suspected gunman in last week's shooting at Georgia's Apalachee High School had warned the school about her son's behavior the morning of the attack, and teachers had already noticed red flags.
On the day of the shooting, Marcee Gray contacted the school counselor via ABC News on September 4, 2024, to alert officials about a concerning message she received from her son, Colt Gray.
""Colt's teacher had sent an email to the counselor earlier this morning, stating that Colt had been making references to school shootings. Based on my gut feelings, text messages, and now this email, I urge you all to leave immediately and go to the classroom," Gray said to the outlet."
Gray stated that the last message she received from her son was "I'm sorry, Mom." She added that her son's father had also received a similar text, which read "I'm sorry" and "You're not to blame for this."
She admitted Colt to inpatient treatment a week earlier because he was on board with it.
Gray screamed in terror after hearing about the shooting.
"I knew what had happened. I just knew in my gut," she said, describing the event as "unfathomable."
"Gray told ABC News, "I would take their place in a heartbeat if I could.""
Planet Chronicle Digital has contacted Gray and the district for additional comment.
Colt Gray, 14, is accused of shooting and killing two students, Christian Angulo and Mason Schermerhorn, both 14, and two teachers, Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Cristina Irimie, 53. Eight other students and a teacher were also injured, with seven of them shot, and are expected to recover.
Annie Brown, sister of Marcee Gray, revealed to The Washington Post that her sister had texted her about speaking with a school counselor and warning staff of an "extreme emergency" prior to the killings. Brown stated that Marcee Gray urged her to "immediately" locate her son to ensure his safety.
The newspaper reported that a call log from the family's shared phone plan showed a call was made to the school at 9:50 a.m., while warrants for Gray's arrest say the shooting started at 10:20 a.m.
Charles Polhamus, the boy's grandfather, has revealed that Marcee Gray received a text from her son on Wednesday, expressing regret. Polhamus disclosed to CNN that Marcee Gray drove to Winder, over 200 miles away from Fitzgerald, following the shooting.
It is unclear how Gray obtained the semiautomatic AR-15 style rifle used in the shooting and what he did with it during the two hours between the start of school at 8:15 a.m. and the first shots being fired.
Last week, Colt Gray was charged with four counts of felony murder for the shooting and could face a maximum penalty of life in prison without parole or life with the possibility of parole if convicted.
In Georgia, District Attorney Brad Smith announced on Friday that Colin Gray, the first parent of a school shooting suspect, was charged with several offenses. Gray was accused of second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, and cruelty to children for giving his son a rifle.
Colin Gray and Colt Gray are both being held in detention centers without bail after declining to seek bail in court hearings. They have not been indicted or entered a plea.
Back then, Colin Gray informed the investigator that Colt possessed unloaded guns in the house but knew how to use them and not misuse them. Additionally, he stated that his son had been struggling since their separation and had been bullied at school.
