At sentencing, the daughter of the slain father lashes out at the ballerina stepmother who was convicted of the "Black Swan" murder.
In Florida, Doug Benefield's wife, Ashley Benefield, was convicted of manslaughter for his death.
The ex-ballerina, who was found guilty of murdering her husband in the infamous "Black Swan" case, was given 20 years in prison on Monday, and her stepdaughter expressed her disapproval of her actions in a heartfelt court statement.
In July, Ashley Benefield was convicted of manslaughter for the 2020 shooting death of her husband, Doug Benefield, in Florida during a custody dispute over their daughter.
On Monday, Benefield, 33, was sentenced to 20 years in prison with credit for time served, followed by 10 years of probation, and she looked down with a stone-faced expression.
Eva Benefield, Doug's daughter, stated during her victim impact statement, "I have been eager to speak to her in person after such a long time." She added, "I wish for her to benefit from her time in prison."
"The most painful thought for me is not the idea of losing my dad forever, but rather the realization of how he discovered you during a vulnerable time in his life."
The manslaughter conviction was a lesser charge compared to the original second-degree murder charge that Benefield faced for Doug's death in her Lakewood Ranch, Florida, bedroom on September 27, 2020, in what is now known as the "Black Swan" case.
"Stephanie Murphy, Doug's family attorney, previously stated on CBS's "48 Hours" that Ashley is innocent and pure, like a White Swan."
"Beneath those white feathers lies an evil woman, the Black Swan."
Last year, her attorneys filed a motion stating that the former ballerina, who claims to have fatally shot her husband in self-defense, had ordered him to leave her house and alleges he refused and hit her in the face, resulting in her opening fire.
During the trial, Benefield stated that he believed the shooter was going to kill him. Despite this, investigators reported that there were no indications of physical abuse following the shooting.
Doug was accused by Benefield of psychological abuse, poisoning her with heavy metals while pregnant, discharging a gun in their home, and punching her dog. However, none of these allegations were substantiated.
Her claims and allegations of abuse were made to secure sole custody of their daughter, prosecutors have argued.
After being diagnosed with PTSD, Benefield will undergo a mental health evaluation upon her release from prison and during her probation period, as ordered by the court during Monday's hearing.
