At least 7 people died after the collapse of a ferry dock in Georgia, officials announced.
At least 20 individuals plunged into the water on Sapelo Island.
On Saturday, a ferry dock gangway in Georgia collapsed, resulting in the death of at least seven individuals, as reported by local authorities.
At approximately 4:30 p.m., a section of the Marsh Landing Dock on Sapelo Island collapsed, causing several individuals to fall into the water, as reported by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (Georgia DNR). Sapelo Island is a barrier island situated in McIntosh County and can only be reached via ferry.
At least 20 individuals have fallen into the water, but the extent of injuries is yet to be determined.
"According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Georgia DNR spokesperson Tyler Jones confirmed seven fatalities and multiple people were transported to hospitals after an incident in the water. The search for individuals is ongoing."
The Georgia DNR reports that multiple agencies are involved in the rescue mission.
"The Georgia DNR and other emergency agencies have deployed boats, helicopters, and side-scan sonar for search and rescue missions. The gangway on Sapelo Island has been secured, and the incident is currently being investigated."
"The Georgia DNR will continue to collaborate with local, state, and federal agencies, including the Georgia State Patrol, McIntosh County Sheriff's Office, McIntosh County Fire Department, and U.S. Coast Guard, among others. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected, including the entire Sapelo Island Community."
The McIntosh County Sheriff's Office is currently assisting those present at the scene.
"The Elm Grove Baptist Church has been designated as a family re-unification point by the department. It is requested that individuals searching for family members first check there. Additionally, people are asked to be aware of emergency vehicles traveling in the area."
Authorities are actively investigating the incident.
