As details about the victims of the Los Angeles wildfires emerge, it is confirmed that 10 people have died.
Over 10,000 homes and businesses have been destroyed by fires including Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire.
At least 10 people have been killed in the wildfires that are currently burning in Los Angeles County on Friday. One of the victims was reportedly discovered with a garden hose in his hand while attempting to protect his family's 50-year-old home from the flames.
KTLA identified Victor Shaw, 66, as one of the victims of the Eaton Fire in Pasadena. According to his sister Shari, Victor wanted to stay and fight the flames on Tuesday night, but a family friend said his body was found on the side of the road with a hose the next day.
KTLA reported that Shari Shaw stated that he appeared calm and peaceful, lying on the ground.
On Friday, five active wildfires in Los Angeles County – the Palisades Fire, Eaton Fire, Kenneth Fire, Hurst Fire, and Lidia Fire – have collectively burned over 30,000 acres, as stated by Cal Fire.
Nearly 20,000 acres have been scorched by the largest fire, the Palisades Fire, which is only 6% contained. Over 10,000 homes and businesses have been burned across the county.
On Thursday, the Los Angeles Police Department apprehended a man suspected of attempting to ignite a fire amidst the ongoing wildfires in the region.
The government has not yet released figures on the cost of the damage.
Barbara Bruderlin, head of the Malibu Pacific Palisades Chamber of Commerce, stated to The Associated Press that it is currently impossible to determine the extent of the destruction other than "total devastation and loss."
Bruderlin stated that there are places where nothing remains, not even a single piece of wood, only dirt is left.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office announced on Thursday night that they have been notified of 10 fire-related deaths, with at least five of them occurring in the Eaton Fire and two in the Palisades Fire.
In Altadena, two individuals who perished in the fire were Anthony Mitchell, a 67-year-old amputee, and his son, Justin, who had cerebral palsy. They were waiting for an ambulance but did not escape the flames before they reached safety, as Mitchell's daughter, Hajime White, informed The Washington Post.
According to CBS News, an 83-year-old grandfather named Rodney Nickerson was discovered deceased in Altadena.
Nickerson's daughter, Kimiko, informed the station that his body was found intact among the debris and ash in his bed.
Erliene Kelley, a retired pharmacy technician living near Shaw and Nickerson, was identified as another victim by the New York Times.
