An undocumented Salvadoran man was charged with murdering a Virginia woman during a weekend carjacking, according to immigration officials.
Melody Waldecker, a 54-year-old grandmother, was killed in a fatal encounter on Sunday, and Jose Aguilar-Martinez, 21, has been charged with the crime, according to FOX 5 DC.
At approximately 11:30 a.m., Loudoun County Sheriff's Office deputies arrived at the scene and discovered Waldecker deceased. Upon investigation, it was determined that she was struck by her own vehicle while attempting to apprehend the suspected carjacker who had fled the scene.
About 45 minutes after Aguilar-Martinez was found, he was arrested and taken to a local hospital due to an unrelated medical condition, according to the news outlet.
According to Planet Chronicle, ICE stated that Aguilar-Martinez entered the U.S. as an undocumented immigrant at an unknown date and location.
Immigration authorities will receive him upon his release from local custody, as per an ICE detainer request.
Some cities and counties, often referred to as "sanctuary," disregard such requests and release undocumented immigrants accused of crimes back into the community.
