An Oregon man was apprehended and accused of murder in relation to a 2022 missing person case.
Ryan Staggs' murder charge against Murphy Calvin Henry II, 54.
A suspect has been arrested by Oregon police for the murder of a man who disappeared three years ago.
On January 9, 2022, 54-year-old Murphy Calvin Henry II was arrested for allegedly murdering 30-year-old Ryan Staggs, who was last seen at his home in Newport, Oregon on January 31, 2022, and reported missing the following month.
The Newport Police Department stated that despite numerous tips, nothing led to Staggs, and the Lincoln County District Attorney Cold Case Unit has continued to follow-up leads and develop new information regarding Staggs' disappearance since May 2022.
During the execution of a search warrant on Dec. 27, cadaver dogs detected the scent of human remains in the soil removed from the backyard. Despite this, no human remains were discovered. However, investigators were able to obtain additional information and identify additional witnesses.
On Jan. 8, a shallow grave was discovered in "remote Lincoln County," believed to be the location of Staggs' remains. However, official identification is yet to be confirmed by the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office, according to police.
Despite being found, Staggs remains listed on two missing persons websites, the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System and Missing People in America.
An unknown assailant shot him in the face while sleeping in his home in August 2021, prior to his disappearance.
The poster mentioned that Staggs' vehicle was missing when he disappeared, but was later found and sold at auction.
According to police, Henry has been accused of second-degree murder, abuse of a corpse in the second degree, and tampering with evidence.
The police did not provide any details about the motive or cause of death, but stated that the investigation is ongoing and urged anyone with information about the disappearance or murder of Staggs to contact their tip line at 541-270-1856 or by email at [email protected].
