An illegal immigrant with a prior rape conviction in Maryland was arrested by ICE, setting a new record.
An illegal immigrant, Madai Gamaliel Amaya, was found guilty of raping a Maryland resident, according to authorities.
This fiscal year, immigration authorities in Baltimore, Maryland, have arrested a record 153 illegal immigrant sex offenders, including a Honduran man who was previously convicted of raping a Maryland resident and was subsequently deported from the United States.
Last week, the Enforcement and Removal Operations branch of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced that Madai Gamaliel Amaya was arrested on August 29 in Montgomery Village.
ERO Baltimore secured a record 153 noncitizen sex offenders arrested in their area of operations during a single fiscal year, with 153 victims now safe from their predators thanks to ERO officers, according to ERO Executive Associate Director Daniel Bible.
Amaya was arrested by Montgomery County police on Jan. 8, 2009, and charged with second-degree rape. He had initially entered the U.S. illegally at an unknown date and place years ago, ICE said.
In 2013, Amaya was deported after ICE filed a detainer request in 2010 with local authorities. He was convicted months later and sentenced to 10 years in prison and three years of supervised probation upon his release. Two years and six months of the sentence was suspended by a judge.
On July 27, 2016, Amaya attempted to enter the U.S. illegally near Hidalgo, Texas, and was caught by U.S. Border Patrol agents. He was later convicted of unlawful entry in 2017 and received a 30-month sentence in an Oklahoma federal prison.
In 2018, he was deported once more and later re-entered the U.S. at an undisclosed time.
Last month, he was arrested and is currently in custody, awaiting deportation proceedings, authorities stated.
