An Amish woman from Pennsylvania succumbs to her injuries 18 years after being shot in a schoolhouse.
Charles Carl Roberts IV shot Rosanna S. King when she was 6 years old.
An Amish woman who was severely injured by a gunman who killed five girls at a Pennsylvania schoolhouse 18 years ago has passed away.
On Thursday, 23-year-old Rosanna S. King passed away at her home in Philadelphia. According to an obituary from Furman Home for Funerals in Leola, Pennsylvania, a funeral will be held at her home in the farming community of Paradise on Friday.
In October 2006, King was one of the individuals killed in the shooting at the West Nickel Mines Amish School.
A 32-year-old milk truck driver named Charles Carl Roberts IV barricaded himself inside the schoolhouse after allowing the boys and some adults to exit.
Before killing himself, Roberts barricaded himself and shot 10 girls.
At the time, King was six years old and belonged to an Old Order Amish Church community. Out of the survivors who were shot, King was considered to have sustained the most severe injuries.
She sustained a headshot that rendered her unable to speak and necessitated her being fed through a tube.
The station reported that King relied on others to transport and care for her.
After a year since the shooting, King's family stated about her improvement, mentioning that the most challenging aspect has been observing her struggle.
The Amish community also released a statement after the school massacre.
For the families in Nickel Mines, life goes on with daily and seasonal demands, but each day brings with it pain, grief, and questions that remind them of their loss.
A new schoolhouse was constructed ten days after the old one was destroyed by a shooting.
The shooting at a Georgia high school, in which two students and two teachers were killed, occurred a day before the death of the king.
