An American mother, who is facing a potential life sentence for allegedly killing her two children in the UK, is fighting to remain in the country.
In December 2023, Kimberlee Singler's two youngest children were discovered deceased in their Colorado residence.
This week, in a London courtroom, an English attorney defended a Colorado woman accused of murdering her two children in December 2023, arguing against her extradition from the United Kingdom to the United States.
Kimberlee Singler was arrested by U.K. authorities on December 30, 2023, following accusations by Colorado authorities that she killed her 9-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son, and injured her 11-year-old daughter before fleeing overseas.
Edward Fitzgerald, Kings Counsel (KC) and her attorney, argued that extraditing Singler to the United States would violate the European Convention of Human Rights, as she would not be eligible for parole if convicted, according to NBC News affiliate KOAA.
On Jan. 24, it is anticipated that Judge John Zani will make a determination regarding Singler's extradition.
A 36-year-old man has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, three counts of child abuse, and one count of assault.
In September, when Singler's extradition proceedings began, Joel Smith, the attorney representing the United States in the U.K. extradition case, stated that Singler was accused of killing her two children and attempting to kill the third during a contentious custody battle with her husband, as reported by NBC.
Smith, according to NBC, stated that she attacked the third child with a knife, causing serious lacerations, after shooting the first two children in the head and neck.
In December 2023, the Colorado authorities discovered spent rounds, a blood-stained knife, and empty bottles of sleeping pills in a trash can during their investigation of the crime scene. The two dead children were found in bed together by the police.
The police department in Colorado Springs reported that they received a 911 call about a burglary at Singler's address, but later discovered that the report was not accurate.
According to NBC, in September, Smith stated that the defendant instructed the three children to shut their eyes, led the first two children into the bedroom, and then told the third child to close her eyes. Afterward, the defendant cut her to the side of the neck.
In September, Smith contended that a governor might eventually grant Singler clemency if she is given a life sentence without the chance of parole.
In the U.K., life sentences without the possibility of parole are considered "totally alien" to us, said Fitzgerald. Currently, there are 63 people serving life sentences in the U.K., while the U.S. has 49,000 people serving life sentences, Smith said, according to NBC.
