On Monday, before 7 a.m., the "21 Days of Prayer" event at the church was preparing to end for the day.
According to Irondale police, Meadows was transported to Grandview Medical Center and passed away due to his injuries.
For decades, Meadows has been considered a "valued member" of Irondale's community.
"Stewart stated that Lt. Meadows was a man of few words but always led by example and embodied the heart of a true public servant. He will be dearly missed by his colleagues at the Irondale Police Department, as well as by all of the city's employees and citizens. Although we are saddened by his passing, we take comfort in knowing that he is now with his heavenly father. We will continue to pray for his family as they grieve this great loss."
The police department announced that grief support is available for officers and others in need following Meadows' passing.
Since the church's main campus opened almost 18 years ago, Meadows has been associated with Church of the Highlands.
Hodges stated in an interview with AL.com that Meadows was considered family and their hearts were heavy with grief.
"Hodges stated that all their thoughts and prayers are with the wife, daughter, son, family members, fellow officers, and those who loved the deceased. Despite the hardships and challenges, they believe that God will offer comfort, strength, and reassurance based on the promise of heaven. As a church, they will do everything in their power to support the family."
On Monday, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey conveyed her sympathies to Meadows' family and church community in a statement on X.
Ivey wrote, "I am saddened by the news of Irondale Police Lieutenant Mark Meadows' tragic death, a veteran and devoted public servant. I offer my condolences to his family, the Irondale Police Department, and the Church of the Highlands community as we come together in prayer."
Tommy Tuberville, a U.S. Senator from Alabama, expressed his sadness upon hearing of Meadows' loss and thanked him for his service as a police officer and an Army veteran.
In 1992, Meadows started his law enforcement career with the Mountain Brook Police Department and later transferred to Irondale.
He was an FBI instructor in pistol and rifle and an NRA instructor in pistol, as per AL.com. He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is leading the investigation into the deadly incident.
