Alleged shooter's encounter with police over 2023 online threats in Georgia school shooting
The police interviewed the dad and the 13-year-old accused gunman during a visit to the home a year ago.
The FBI received an anonymous report about online threats made by the alleged Georgia high school shooter in a group chat on Discord, and now Georgia authorities have released audio from the 2023 visit to the shooter's home.
On Wednesday, the boy who is now charged with felony murder in the deaths of four at Apalachee High School in Winder spoke face-to-face with Jackson County, Georgia, sheriff's officers.
On May 21, 2023, the sheriff's officers wrote a detailed investigation report about their interactions with suspect Colt Gray, who was 13 years old at the time, following a tip from the FBI about a threat on the Discord messaging app, which is commonly used by video gamers.
As the police question Colin Gray, the father reveals more about the accusation and the visit, calling it "b*****t" and a "terrorist threat."
"Going to school is challenging for Colin because he often gets bullied," he stated.
Colin informs the officer that he and Colt's mother went through a divorce and were subsequently evicted.
Colin explained that at first, his son struggled with the separation. He takes him to Jefferson Middle school and he's been doing really well.
The officer recognizes the gravity of the situation, and Colin concurs, stating that Colt is fully aware of the severity.
Colin alleges that he has visited the school numerous times, accuses other children of touching his son, and asserts that Colt wished to leave the school district.
Colin discusses the significance of gun safety after stating that he frequently experiences being picked on.
The officer inquires, "Do you possess any weapons in your home?"
"I do," Colin says.
"Are they accessible," the officer then asks.
"Colin says, "They are not loaded, but they do a lot of shooting and deer hunting. He shot his first deer this year. I'm in shock and pissed off to be honest.""
Colin says, "I'm a little taken aback by the whole thing, but I can assure you that I take it very seriously, as does he."
"I have no knowledge of him saying such things. If he did, I would be extremely angry, and all guns would disappear, making them inaccessible to him," Colin says. "I'm being truthful. I'm trying to educate him about firearms, safety, and the outdoors."
"Get him away from the video game," the officer responds.
"Colin confirms that the photo on his phone depicts him with blood on his cheeks after shooting his first deer. He declares it as the greatest day ever."
Colin emphasized that it was a shock to hear what was being told to him, and he urged whoever was communicating with him to convey the seriousness of the situation. He emphasized that it was not a joke.
"We wouldn't be here," the officer said.
"Yes, I understand, and I'm telling you right now that we often discuss school shootings and other incidents. Yes, I know you're being picked on at school. And, is everything okay? That's why I keep going up there. No, you never really know, and I don't want anything to happen to him, so." Colin finished.
Colin agrees to fetch Colt for the officer.
Colt enters the room and the officer informs him that a report will be made. Despite appearing to believe Colt, the officer later jokes about people lying to the police.
The officer and Colt engaged in a brief conversation about school-related matters, including the conclusion of school and transitioning to high school.
Colin Gray, 54, is accused of several offenses related to his son, Colt Gray, 14, including four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder, and eight counts of child abuse.
On Thursday, it was reported that the elder Gray intentionally permitted his son to have a weapon.
He is being held at the Barrow County jail.
