Aide to Hochul accused of promoting "equity" policies on behalf of CCP in resurfaced video.
Linda Sun, a former aide to New York Gov Kathy Hochul, is accused of using $6M in Chinese Communist Party funds to purchase property in New York and Hawaii.
A video from 2021 reveals that Linda Sun, the former aide to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul who was recently arrested and accused of acting on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party, had previously advocated for "equity" policies in her role.
On Tuesday, Linda Sun, 40, and her husband, Chris Hu, 41, were arrested for charges including violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act, visa fraud, alien smuggling, and money laundering conspiracy.
The "Women in Government Leadership Webinar" presented by the New York chapter of the nonprofit Tzu Chi Foundation was recorded on Dec. 16, 2021. At the time, Sun was the deputy chief of staff to Hochul.
"Sun stated in the video that while most people generally agree that diversity and inclusion are good, he believes it's important to also incorporate the concept of equity."
The official stated that equity ensures that all individuals at the table have an equal opportunity to contribute their ideas and thoughts.
Unfortunately, we lack significant leadership or representation of Asian Americans in the corporate world and government field, as Sun stated.
During the webinar, Sun mentioned the 2018 executive order signed by former Gov. Andrew Cuomo that prioritized diversity, inclusion, and equity.
Sun stated in the video that it is crucial to have one individual at every state agency who is responsible for ensuring that diversity, inclusion, and equity are given top priority, and who reports directly to the commissioner or the highest-ranking official in that agency.
At least five diverse candidates should be present in the pool of ten job applicants.
The Brooklyn District Attorney's office's prosecutors allege that Sun collaborated with the Chinese government on multiple occasions, including arranging a high-level state visit to China and obstructing Taiwanese officials from meeting with American officials.
Officials in China are said to have facilitated millions of dollars in transactions for Hu, who operated in the country. Hu and Sun are accused of using the funds to purchase real estate in Long Island, Honolulu, and a 2024 Ferrari Roma sports car worth over $6 million.
In 2023, Sun was dismissed from her job due to "proof of wrongdoing."
"The Executive Chamber hired this individual more than a decade ago, but terminated her employment in March 2023 after discovering evidence of misconduct. Immediately after reporting her actions to law enforcement, the Executive Chamber has assisted law enforcement throughout the process."
On Tuesday night, Jarrod Schaeffer, Sun's attorney, expressed concerns about the government's investigation to Planet Chronicle Digital.
"Schaeffer stated that the filing of the charges was disappointing, as they were inflammatory and seemed to be the result of an overly aggressive prosecution. He added that the client was eager to exercise their right to a speedy trial and defend against the accusations in a court of law."
Planet Chronicle Digital reached out Hochul's office for comment.
