After a shooting threat, Wittenberg University in Ohio has canceled events and increased security measures.
In the past week, there has been an increase in threats directed towards local government, businesses, and schools in Springfield, according to the university.
After receiving a shooting threat, a university in Ohio has canceled campus activities on Sunday and increased the number of police officers on campus.
An email threatening a potential shooting on campus tomorrow, Sunday, September 15, 2024, has prompted Wittenberg University to take extreme precautions. The message specifically targeted Haitian members of the community.
The Springfield Police Division and the FBI are working with Wittenberg Police to investigate the shooting threat.
Everyone on or near campus should be cautious and alert, and prepare for additional instructions or a potential lockdown.
All campus activities scheduled for Sunday have been canceled.
"The university acknowledges that Springfield has recently faced an increase in threats to its government, businesses, and schools. The university takes this threat seriously and will keep the campus informed as more information becomes available."
The alert emerges during a time when Springfield and its Haitian migrants are receiving national attention, with former President Trump, his running mate, Sen. JD Vance R-Ohio, and others focusing on the issue.
The university issued safety guidelines for students and visitors on campus.
Be cautious of your surroundings while on campus or in the community. Secure your room door when sleeping or studying. Report any suspicious individuals or unusual activities to campus police immediately, even if they are outside of residence halls and housing. Be aware of strangers who may attend gatherings at your residence and take action to address their presence by calling Wittenberg Police. Do not allow others to 'tailgate' behind you to gain entry into a secured building or space.
Any crime committed against our campus community will be reported to law enforcement.
Immediately contact the Wittenberg Police Division's emergency line at 937-327-6363 if you notice any suspicious activity. For non-emergency situations, call 937-327-6231.
The Haitian population in Springfield, a city of approximately 60,000 residents, has increased in recent years. The city asserts that these Haitian migrants are legally present in the country under a federal program that permits them to temporarily reside there.
