According to the chaplain, Mason Schermerhorn, the victim of the Apalachee High School shooting, sent his last text message to his mother from the restroom.
Mason Schermerhorn's coworker helped search for him after the Apalachee High School shooting.
A chaplain and youth minister tried to help find the teen who was one of the four killed in a mass shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, before he was discovered in the restroom.
On Wednesday morning, while on his way home, Ronald Clark received a phone call from his wife informing him about the shooting.
He quickly offered his services to law enforcement at the command post and was instructed to assist crews on the investigative side.
An hour later, he admitted to seeing the students who were "hurt."
"He acknowledged the difficulty of the situation, stating that despite wanting to have large arms to grab everyone, there are limits to what can be achieved."
He characterized the expressions of victims as "shock" and commended those who shared their experiences with him as "strong."
Thirty minutes later, Clark stated that he aided Schermerhorn's mother, who is also his coworker, in searching for him.
""It was difficult, as we had discussed her children on Tuesday this week, and she emphasized that the bond and connection she shares with them is unbreakable," Clark stated."
The chaplain was informed by Schermerhorn's mother that she believed the 14-year-old autistic student was doing well.
"Clark recalls her saying, 'Hey, I can't find him,' and she replied, 'I'm just here to pick him up. I know he's safe. He texted me that he's in the restroom. Can you please help?'"
Clark swiftly discovered that Schermerhorn was among the "confirmed" deceased after taking a photo of the teen to the command post.
"From what I was told, he was a great kid who loved life and didn't have any issues with anyone. Despite being autistic, he had a glow," Clark said.
Parents should maintain communication with their kids, as advised by the youth minister.
""Some children's faces lit up on Wednesday when they were reunited with their parents following the school shooting," he said, emphasizing the importance of paying attention to one's children."
