About 29 people have been arrested for looting in Los Angeles, and a burglary suspect disguised as a firefighter was also apprehended, according to the sheriff.
Los Angeles police chief advises that only firefighters should be present in mandatory evacuation zones.
In Los Angeles, 29 individuals have been arrested for criminal activities related to the ongoing wildfires, including a burglary suspect who attempted to disguise himself as a firefighter, officials said Sunday. According to Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna, 25 of those arrested were in the area of the Eaton Fire, while four others came from the Palisades Fire evacuated zone. Luna recalled seeing a man dressed as a firefighter while patrolling the Malibu area. "I asked him if he was okay because he was sitting down. I didn't realize we had him in handcuffs," Luna said. "We are turning him over to LAPD because he was dressed like a fireman, and he was not. He just got caught burglarizing a home. So those are issues that our front line deputies and police officers are dealing with."
On Saturday night, one person was arrested in Los Angeles for breaking curfew, while three others were arrested the previous night for burglary.
"Three individuals were in a vehicle and were stopped. They were in a location where they were not supposed to be. One of them was wearing a fire jacket and a fire hat. Additionally, he was arrested for impersonating a firefighter," McDonald stated. "People will go to great lengths to exploit the victims of this tragedy."
The curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. local time remains in effect from Sunday night to Monday. It is important to note that only public safety personnel and disaster workers are allowed in these areas. Anyone found in these locations will be subject to arrest. The enforcement of the curfew is crucial in securing the burn areas and evacuated properties, preventing looters from entering. This measure also helps protect public safety personnel who are working in challenging conditions.
The chief advised caution for those donating to victims, urging them to research charities' legitimacy to avoid falling victim to fraudulent organizations.
The number of deaths resulting from the California wildfires has increased to 16, and the Los Angeles medical examiner has issued a warning to scammers who plan to exploit the victims of the wildfires for financial gain. The medical examiner has been in close contact with local, state, and federal prosecutors to ensure that any such criminal activity is swiftly and effectively addressed.
The Board of Supervisors in Los Angeles County is eager to prosecute anyone who is taking advantage of residents during this difficult time, whether it is a burglary or a white-collar crime in a scam or anything else that may be considered. At a press conference, Chair Kathryn Barger invited President-elect Trump to visit the wildfire devastation in Los Angeles County.
She expressed her anticipation of welcoming President-elect Trump to their communities so he could witness the urgent need, yet the remarkable potential, optimism, and resilience of their affected neighbors. Through observing this hope, she is confident that their communities will revive and reconstruct.
Barger and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stated that they have been communicating with high-level officials in the incoming administration, refuting claims of animosity from a reporter.
