Patricia Sierra is accused of grand larceny, burglary of a business, and disturbing human remains.
A woman from Las Vegas, Nevada was arrested after being caught on surveillance video stealing a casket from a funeral home, according to police.
On Aug. 29 at approximately 5:30 p.m., the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department apprehended 47-year-old Patricia Sierra and accused her of grand larceny, burglary of a business, and disturbing human remains.
On Aug. 27, officers were called to the Affordable Cremation & Burial Service of Las Vegas on Charleston Boulevard due to a report of a body lying face down in front of the business, with a casket nearby.
Upon their arrival, the officers discovered a body in a rocky landscape and found an open door with shattered glass on one side of the building. They cleared the property to ensure no one was present.
Several other clues were discovered during the investigation, such as flower petals outside the door and a child's bike near the building.
A woman between 30 and 50 years old with a buzz cut, wearing a black tank top, black leggings and black sneakers was captured on surveillance video provided by the manager of the business to the police.
The woman in the video broke the front window, unlocked the door, and took the casket out of the viewing room, police said.
The woman made several visits to the business before exiting the premises, according to police.
A caller informed police that a woman who stole a casket from their business was spotted at a nearby convenience store two days later.
According to the arrest report, the woman identified herself as Sierra, and investigators recognized her from the police-provided image as the person in the surveillance video.
Sierra was taken to police headquarters and read her Miranda Rights before allegedly admitting to having a substance abuse problem and "blacking out."
She claimed she didn't recall breaking into the funeral home but admitted to burglarizing a business before.
What was Sierra's preferred method for breaking into a property, according to detectives? She allegedly said it was to use a rock to break a window.
Though police questioned Sierra about her apology, she maintained her innocence and claimed she was not trying to be malicious.
Though she could not recall why she committed the burglary, Sierra admitted to being the person in the surveillance video after being shown it by police. She also stated that she blacked out that night after consuming six beers.
The grand larceny charge for which Sierra was arrested has resulted in her bail being set at $11,000, and her preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 18, as per court records.
