Last month, more than 100 hikers were stranded in Arizona's Grand Canyon National Park due to deadly flash flooding, which the hiker from Texas described as the "craziest day of their lives."

Whitnye Raquel, 35, revealed to SFGate that she and her friend Paige Renae spent three nights at the Havasupai Reservation, which attracts visitors from all over the world due to its stunning waterfalls, campgrounds by the creek, and the famous blue-green waters of the canyon.

On Aug. 22, a steady rain caused a disaster when the creek turned muddy and swelled, with water gushing from the canyon walls and dislodging rocks.

Havasupai tribal members permitted tourists to take refuge in their village's school cafeteria after the initial flood destroyed wooden bridges and ladders on the trail, and a subsequent flood made hiking out unfeasible.

"Raquel remembered the tribal members saying, 'The trail is now impossible,' as they pointed out the boulders blocking the way. 'Nobody can hike in or out,' they declared. 'You guys will all be helicopter-evacuated tomorrow morning. Nobody is hiking out of here.'"

The tribe's hikers, who had endured what Raquel called "the craziest day of their lives," worked together to help each other through the ordeal while sheltering with the tribe.

As a private helicopter service and an Arizona National Guard Blackhawk helicopter transported 104 evacuees from the canyon, park officials confirmed that two hikers, a husband and wife, had been swept away in the water near Havasu Creek's confluence with the Colorado River.

Andrew and Chenoa Nickerson, hikers from Gilbert, Arizona, were identified. Andrew was rescued later that night by a group rafting the 280-mile stretch of the Grand Canyon river.

Nickerson later wrote on social media that he was moments away from death when a stranger leaped from his raft and selflessly saved him from the raging waters.

Chenoa Nickerson, his 33-year-old wife, disappeared into the river's main channel and was missing for several days. Unlike most hikers at Havasupai, she did not wear a life jacket.

Her body was discovered floating in the Colorado River by members of a commercial river trip.

Raquel informed SFGate that the experience underscores the notion that humans are no match for the overwhelming power of nature.
