A search is underway at a Michigan landfill for the mother who disappeared 10 days ago.

Police are searching a landfill for evidence related to the disappearance of Ashley Elkins, a mother-of-two from Michigan, according to Fox 2 Detroit, citing police sources.

On Jan. 2, Elkins, a 30-year-old woman from Warren, vanished while running errands and informed her family members that she was returning from a beauty supply store.

Deandre Howard Booker, 32, her ex-boyfriend, was arrested in Flint and charged with lying to police during a violent crime investigation, which carries a four-year penalty, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office.

On Monday, officials spent more than six hours searching the Pine Tree Acres Landfill in Lenox Township, Michigan, for searchers in yellow suits. According to the Detroit News, the search focused on approximately six to seven acres within the landfill.

He expressed confidence that the search was progressing correctly and that they would discover the evidence they seek.

According to Elkins family members, her disappearance is unusual and no one has heard from her since January 2. They stated that her phone last pinged near her ex's Roseville apartment, as reported by Fox 2.

On January 7th, police discovered her car near 13 Mile and Little Mack in Roseville, just three miles from her apartment. The following night, her ex-boyfriend's apartment was searched and he was arrested.

The police searched several businesses in the area for video evidence and used digital forensics to locate Elkins. Additionally, they confiscated a dumpster from the apartments as part of the investigation.

According to the Macomb Daily, Elkins' mother revealed that Elkins and Booker ended their relationship in September, after dating for approximately a year.

Elkins' aunt, Maurice Morton, an attorney, told Fox 2 that the family believes Booker may have been involved in her disappearance and that there is reason to believe her remains are in a certain location.

On January 9, Booker was brought before a judge in Roseville District Court and was given a bond of $250,000.00 in cash or surety only.

Peter J. Lucido, Macomb County Prosecutor, stated that Booker consistently lied to police officers from January 4th to January 7th and intentionally gave false and misleading information during the investigation into Elkins' disappearance.

"Lucido stated, "We sympathize with the family of the missing woman during this challenging period. Disseminating false information to law enforcement in such a case not only impedes the investigation but also intensifies the anguish and confusion of the loved ones seeking answers. We remain steadfast in our pursuit of justice and our commitment to making every effort to bring closure to this case.""

At Booker's hearing, his lawyer stated that he was jobless and requested a fair bail amount.

Boooker is accused of planning to leave Ohio after searching for the fastest routes and researching what to do while on the run, how to beat a polygraph test, how to delete his Google search history, and if blood is traceable, prosecutors said.

On Thursday, the prosecution contended that Booker's searches indicated he would abscond if released on bond, and his bond was set at $250,000 cash/surety.

In 2017, Booker was removed from the United States Army with a less than honorable discharge after going AWOL, according to Fox 2 Detroit, which cited court documents. The year before, he was charged with several crimes during service, including larceny and possessing fake identification documents.

A probable cause hearing will take place on January 22 via Zoom, and a preliminary exam is scheduled for January 29.
