A New York City Israeli consulate was targeted by a Virginia man who is accused of planning a "mass casualty" attack.
An Egyptian citizen, Abdullah Azz al-Din Taha Muhammad Hassan, was scheduled for removal from the country.
An Egyptian man residing in Virginia, who was scheduled for removal, has been accused of plotting to attack the Israeli embassy in New York City.
According to court documents, Abdullah Azz al-Din Taha Muhammad Hassan is accused of providing bomb-making instructions and plans for attacking the Manhattan consulate to an undercover FBI source. He was arrested on Tuesday, as confirmed by the FBI to Planet Chronicle Digital.
Hassan is accused of distributing information about explosives, destructive devices, and weapons of mass destruction in order to commit a federal crime.
The FBI's New York Office is reassuring the Jewish community in New York that it remains vigilant in identifying, investigating, and disrupting potential threats to the community. The office, along with its law enforcement partners, will use every tool at their disposal to do so. Community members are urged to report suspicious activity to law enforcement and call 911 in cases of imminent violence or threats to life.
"We will persist in making our communities secure environments for everyone, and we appreciate the public's ongoing confidence and collaboration."
The FBI's attention was drawn to Hassan after the Fairfax County Police Department informed federal authorities that a tipster had alerted police about his social media posts on X. The tipster claimed that the account displayed "radical and terrorist-leaning behavior."
Hassan, who had previously praised the Islamic State terror group and other radical figures, was charged with attempting to recruit an FBI confidential source to carry out a "mass casualty attack" in August, federal prosecutors said.
Hassan instructed the informant on how to construct a bomb, acquire weapons, and create a "martyrdom video," according to authorities. In November, he reportedly chose the Consulate General of Israel as the target for the attack, stating that it would be simpler to carry out the attack with small arms and be "martyred" by the police.
Prosecutors claimed that Hassan believed New York would be a lucrative target for an attack. While planning the attack, Hassan advised the source to travel to countries without extradition agreements with the US. During the attack, Hassan instructed the source to choose between murdering people at the consulate with an assault rifle or detonating an explosive vest in a group of targets, according to court documents.
Authorities stated that Hassan requested the source to live-stream the attack so he could view it in real-time.
The Jewish state will not be intimidated by terror, according to Jonathan Harounoff, the international spokesperson for Israel's Permanent Mission to the United Nations.
"We will not remain silent in the face of hate and violence. We will not cease our pursuit of justice and peace. We will persist in our struggle to recover our 100 hostages who are still being held in Hamas terror tunnels in Gaza."
Israel's consul general in New York, Ofir Akunis, expressed gratitude to authorities for preventing the alleged attack.
"The attempted attack by terror organizations on the sovereign soil of Israel is a reminder that terror knows no boundaries and must be fought everywhere and every time. The threat it poses to the western world and its values must be addressed by all western democracies together. We will prevail."
