The former employee of Calhoun City High School, whose identity was not disclosed by the Calhoun County School District, is said to have mistaken the snacks for beef jerky.
According to Dr. Lisa Langford, the district superintendent, at least eight children consumed at least one bite of the treats on Wednesday.
The school nurse was praised by Langford for her quick reaction to the incident, which involved contacting Poison Control, as reported by WTVA. The district also informed the parents of the affected children about the situation.
During a birthday celebration for a few students, an incident reportedly occurred, according to the local outlet.
At least one child was rushed to the doctor with a stomachache, according to WTVA.
