A Michigan man is accused of stabbing his company boss in a possible "copycat" crime following the murder of the UnitedHealthcare CEO.
A few weeks ago, Nathan Mahoney, 32, began working for Anderson Express Inc.
A man from Michigan is accused of stabbing the president of his workplace during a meeting, possibly inspired by the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
During a staff meeting on Tuesday, Erik Denslow, the head of Anderson Express Inc. manufacturing company in Muskegon, was stabbed, according to the Fruitport Township Police Department.
"Police Deputy Chief Greg Poulson stated on Wednesday that a copycat motive cannot be entirely ruled out in relation to this incident, as it is a thought that comes to everyone's mind in the current climate."
Denslow underwent surgery and remains in serious but stable condition, police said.
Nathan Mahoney, 32, was present at the staff meeting at 9:20 a.m. when he left and returned 10 minutes later. He then allegedly stabbed Denslow in the side, according to the news outlet.
A few weeks after joining the company, Mahoney was arrested by police 15 minutes after fleeing in his vehicle.
Investigators are not ruling out a possible copycat attack, as they have not yet determined a motive for the attack. Fellow employees described the suspect as having a quiet demeanor.
Poulson stated that they were examining all of the suspect's social accounts and electronic media in an attempt to establish a motive for the act.
Denslow was promoted to president of the company within a year of joining as vice president and general manager, according to his LinkedIn profile.
Anderson Express, which operates in the automotive and defense sectors, has been contacted by Planet Chronicle Digital following an incident. In a statement to Fox 17, the company expressed shock over the incident and stated that its first priority is the health and well-being of its president, who has a positive prognosis for a full and speedy recovery. The company also emphasized the importance of supporting its employees as they process the senseless assault.
Manhoney was accused of assault with intent to murder and evading capture. He is currently being detained in the Muskegon County Jail on a bond of $501,000.
The shooting of Thompson in New York City on Dec. 4 bore resemblance to the incident, and the suspected gunman, Luigi Mangione, was extradited from Pennsylvania to New York on Thursday.
