James Kerr escapes on a riding lawn mower before accidentally shooting himself in the hand: police
A newly released video of a Michigan man riding a mower shows him refusing to stop for a deputy, getting tased, and accidentally shooting himself in the hand.
According to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, on Sept. 19, police arrested a man with several warrants at a home in Leoni Township.
James Mitchell Kerr, a 41-year-old man, was arrested at his home by the deputy while riding a lawn mower.
The deputy chased Kerr as he accelerated toward him and rode away.
Despite the deputy's threats to tase him, Kerr allegedly refused to follow commands and the mower eventually stopped in a ditch.
The deputy ordered Kerr to stop, but Kerr ignored the command and retrieved a handgun from the mower, pointing it at the deputy.
Kerr shot himself in the hand after being struck by the deputy's stun gun.
The gunshot wound was treated and Kerr was released from the local hospital, while the deputy remained unharmed.
"The Jackson County Sheriff's Office stated that the incident highlights the risks that deputies face daily and how quickly a routine encounter can escalate. Fortunately, the deputy and suspect were not harmed."
Once cleared, Kerr was arrested and released on bail.
Gary Schuette, the Jackson County Sheriff, requested an independent criminal investigation by the Michigan State Police while his office conducted an internal investigation. Despite the internal investigation finding no policy violations during the altercation, Schuette requested an external investigation.
Last week, Kerr was bound over for trial in circuit court after being charged in October. He is still being held in the Jackson County Jail.
