A man from Houston with a history of criminal offenses is charged with stabbing his mother.
Abreu, 35, is accused of assaulting a family member and intending to commit another felony through burglary.
A man from Texas, who has a criminal record, was arrested after he broke into a house and stabbed his 58-year-old mother when she refused to give him her wallet.
On Saturday at approximately 3:15 p.m. local time in Houston, it is alleged that Joseph Anthony Abreu, 35, kicked down the door of his home and demanded his mother's wallet once inside.
Houston police say that Abreu pushed and stabbed her when she didn't comply. The Farnsworth Street home, six miles north of Downtown Houston, is unclear if it is his mother's residence.
On Sunday, Abreu, a convicted felon, fled the scene before police arrived but was later apprehended.
According to police, the victim was taken to a hospital in a stable condition.
Abreu has been accused of aggravated assault against a family member and burglary with the intention of committing another crime.
This is not Abreu’s first run-in with the law.
In 2015, Abreu was convicted of prostitution with three or more priors in Harris County, as reported by Fox 26 Houston.
In 2021, Abreu attempted to buy a gun from Academy Sports and Outdoors, even though it is illegal for a convicted felon to possess a firearm in Texas.
According to court documents, Abreu presented his driver's license while attempting to purchase a gun. When the clerk informed him that the gun included both a six-round and an eight-round magazine, Abreu responded, "That's great, I'll need eight rounds to kill eight people today," as reported by Fox 26.
Abreu was informed by the clerk that he couldn't purchase the gun due to his remarks, prompting the police to be notified.
Abreu pleaded guilty and was given four years in prison for attempting to possess a firearm as a felon in Texas.
He is currently incarcerated in the Harris County Jail with a combined bond of $202,500. He will be appearing in court later today.
