A Louisiana hunter was cited for violations after mistakenly shooting a man for a deer.
On private property, two men were hunting deer when the shooting occurred.
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is emphasizing the significance of hunting safety following a man's shooting by a hunter who mistakenly identified him as a deer.
On December 23, two hunters were involved in a shooting incident on property in Zachary, a city in East Baton Rouge Parish, prompting a response from law enforcement agents.
On a small private property, two hunters unknowingly hunted deer, and one hunter accidentally shot the other, thinking he was a deer.
According to local media, both men were granted permission to be on the property.
The agency stated that he was struck with buckshot from a 20-gauge shotgun. After realizing he had shot a man instead of a deer, the shooter called 911 for assistance.
The man who was shot while hunting was airlifted to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge with non-fatal injuries. The location of the shooting was not disclosed by law enforcement.
Law enforcement found that neither hunter was wearing orange or had deer tags when they investigated what happened. The shooter was given a citation for both violations.
LDWF said additional charges are possible as the investigation remains active.
Hunters should always prioritize safety by wearing orange, as required by law, and positively identifying their target and surroundings before firing their weapon, as advised by the agency.
The LDWF stated that we should collaborate to prevent such incidents and ensure a safe outdoor experience for all.
