In Idaho, a hunter was unexpectedly attacked and bitten by a grizzly bear during an encounter.
On Sunday, in Island Park, which is near Yellowstone National Park and the Idaho-Wyoming border, an individual and his friend were hunting elk in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, as stated by Idaho Fish and Game.
The bear was shot and killed by the hunters after one of them was knocked down and bitten during a surprise encounter, according to Idaho Fish and Game.
The agency stated that the injured person was transported by helicopter to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries after the hunters were able to call 911.
Officials stated that the bear was attacked by the "hunters in self-defense during a surprise encounter from a very close distance."
"I am grateful that both hunters survived the encounter," Fish and Game Regional Supervisor Matt Pieron stated. "I have spoken with the injured hunter and his family, and they are wonderful people. I wish him a speedy recovery from his injuries and the trauma both hunters experienced."
Hunters in Idaho are being advised by Fish and Game to be prepared for grizzly bear encounters and to take necessary precautions such as carrying bear spray and tracking fresh tracks.
They advised that when not hunting, it's best to make noise, especially near creeks and dense vegetation, as most attacks occur by unintentionally startling a bear at close range.
