A hiker from North Carolina is reported to have died at Grand Canyon National Park while on a solo trek, possibly making it the 6th fatality in the area in recent weeks.
This year, at Grand Canyon National Park, a 60-year-old hiker is suspected to be the 14th death.
On Wednesday, a 60-year-old man from North Carolina was discovered deceased in Arizona's Grand Canyon National Park after going on a solo hike, according to park officials.
A backpacker, whose identity was not disclosed, was found on a rugged and remote trail linking the Lower Tapeats and Deer Creek camps, according to the National Park Service (NPS).
A family member reported that he had gone missing on Tuesday during a solo multi-day backpacking trip from Thunder River to Deer Creek, according to NPS.
The Coconino County Medical Examiner and NPS are currently investigating the incident. No additional information is currently available.
This year, the park has recorded 14 fatalities, making it the 14th death this year. Officials reported 11 fatalities in 2023, which is usually the range for deaths at the park.
An 80-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman died last Sunday, one from falling into a river during a commercial trip and the other from being swept away while hiking during a flash flood on Aug. 22.
On August 8, a 20-year-old woman from New Mexico was discovered beneath Twin Overlooks. On the same day, a 43-year-old man from Missouri died while attempting a prohibited BASE jump from Yavapai Point. Additionally, on July 31, a 20-year-old man from North Carolina fell to his death at the South Rim.
The park's water pipeline has experienced unprecedented breaks, causing hotels to halt overnight stays.
