A fiery wreck occurred when an SUV driver decided to go on a joyride on New York railroad tracks, according to police.
The SUV was retrieved from the tracks by officials using a crane.
An intoxicated man from New York City allegedly drove his SUV onto train tracks and caused it to catch fire, according to police.
On Sunday at 4:52 p.m., Basilio Hidalgo, 40, was arrested and charged after driving an SUV onto the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and causing a fiery scene due to the vehicle's tires catching fire, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police Department.
The aftermath of the crash was depicted in photos showing Hidalgo's SUV being lifted off the train tracks with the help of a crane.
The MTAPD reported that Hidalgo drove about a half-mile east on the tracks before stopping after two tires of the vehicle were severely damaged and caught fire.
According to MTAPD, officers noticed a black Honda sport utility vehicle halted on the LIRR's Main Line tracks between Bellerose and Floral Park Stations.
"The LIRR Main Line tracks were driven onto by the alleged suspect, who was west of the Elmont-UBS Arena station."
The fire started just east of the Bellerose Station, causing the driver to eventually stop.
The SUV is seen careening across the tracks in a viral video of the incident.
Other track infrastructure, in addition to the third rail, was also significantly damaged by the incident, according to police.
Police said Hildago was arrested and taken into custody without incident.
Hidalgo was accused of first-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree criminal trespassing, and driving under the influence.
