A fatal Mississippi bus crash may have been caused by tire failure, according to the NTSB.
An NTSB spokesperson stated that the bus encountered 'tire blowout' while traveling on Interstate 20 close to Vicksburg.
The cause of the deadly bus accident in Mississippi, which resulted in the deaths of two young siblings and five other passengers, as well as injuries to several others, has been identified.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the early Saturday morning crash was likely due to "tire failure."
A go-team from the NTSB, in collaboration with the Mississippi Highway Patrol, is being dispatched to investigate the safety of Saturday's crash on Interstate 20 near Vicksburg, Mississippi, which involved a motorcoach roadway departure and roll-over after a tire failure.
A one-vehicle crash occurred around 12:40 a.m. in Warren County involving a 2018 Volvo commercial passenger bus, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
On Sunday morning, a go-team of 17 individuals from NTSB will be present at the scene to continue investigating the crash, as stated by Tood Inman, a member of NTSB, during a press conference on Saturday night.
Inman stated, "We extend our deepest sympathies to all those affected by the crash. Our thoughts and prayers are with you."
Inman stated that they are examining several factors that may have caused the crash.
Inman stated that the factors to consider would be the safety of the motor carrier, a Mexican carrier operating in the U.S., tire maintenance, and occupant protection.
"According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, six individuals were declared dead at the scene, while one additional person passed away at Merit Health Hospital in Vicksburg. Out of the 37 passengers involved, their injuries are unknown, and they were transported to various hospitals in Vicksburg and Jackson. The co-driver, however, was not taken to any hospital."
According to Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey, two of the victims who died were siblings, with ages of 6 and 16.
Inman stated that they are still unsure about the bus's itinerary and will continue to gather more information as the investigation progresses. After the bus's data is retrieved, Inman said it will reveal the origin and destination of the bus, as well as its manifest.
