A Detroit police officer was killed in a hit-and-run crash, and the suspect is currently on the run.
For one year, Officer Cameron Richardson served with the Detroit Police Department.
On Sunday, a Detroit police officer was fatally struck in a hit-and-run accident while driving home from work on the city's east side, authorities reported.
A year ago, Officer Cameron Richardson joined the Detroit police department, and he is described as a devoted family man with two daughters and a veteran of the military, according to FOX 2 in Detroit.
"The Detroit Police Department lost Officer Cameron Richardson, who served one year with the Department, in a car accident while off-duty."
The city had lost "one of Detroit's finest," according to Interim Chief Todd Bettison, who made the announcement to reporters.
"Richardson was a distinguished officer, and he will not be forgotten, Bettison stated. We will embrace this family completely."
Richardson was heading north on Hoover Street at Greiner Street when the police encountered him, according to their statement.
Investigators were informed by witnesses that a white van made a left turn onto Hoover Street, driving directly in front of Richardson's Jeep Wrangler.
Upon their arrival at the scene at midnight, officers discovered Richardson's Jeep had flipped over in the accident.
But the other vehicle had left the scene.
During the presser, Bettison expressed gratitude to the Michigan State Police for finding the white van near the accident site.
The police detained all occupants in the van, identified a 28-year-old man as a person of interest, but he has not yet been found.
The Detroit Police Department declined to provide additional information when requested by Planet Chronicle Digital.
"Since the incident, we have been working relentlessly and have executed search warrants. We have identified the individuals in the white van and know the identity of the driver. We are requesting that the driver surrenders."
