A detention officer in Texas was attacked by an inmate, resulting in capital murder charges being filed against the inmate.
Last month, Aaron Thompson, a 45-year-old man, was arrested for charges of assault and evading arrest.
An inmate in Texas killed a 28-year-old detention officer while he was returning the inmate to his cell.
On Tuesday, during a news conference, Ellis County Sheriff Brad Norman disclosed that Officer Isaiah Bias was fatally shot on Monday during an alleged assault at the jail.
"We mourn the loss of one of our own, Isaiah Bias, a 28-year-old detention officer who served over six years with the Ellis County Sheriff's Office," Norman stated.
Aaron Thompson, a 45-year-old suspect, was accused of an alleged attack by Norman, who described it as "pure evil" but did not reveal any details about Bias's death.
"Most of the time, law enforcement officers and detention officers encounter individuals who are having a difficult day. However, there are instances when we encounter truly evil people," Norman stated. "I can honestly say that my staff over the last day has dealt with pure evil."
Norman stated that Thompson was accused of capital murder and he intended to suggest the imposition of the death penalty.
"Norman stated that the murder was heinous, horrific, purposeful, senseless, and not needed. The district attorney's office will make the ultimate decision on whether or not to seek the death penalty in this case. If Norman has anything to say about it, the DA's office will seek the death penalty, but ultimately, the decision lies with the DA's office."
An arrest warrant affidavit obtained by KDFW reveals that Thompson punched Bias, causing him to fall to the ground, and then allegedly choked and hit him with his fist, knee, and foot.
Thompson sat down at a table, leaving Bias in a pool of blood, according to the affidavit.
Last month, Thompson was incarcerated in jail for three charges of assaulting a public official and evading arrest. He was placed in solitary confinement for 23 hours each day, according to Norman.
When Norman was a teenager, he met Bias through the explorer program in jail.
Norman stated that he wanted to work in law enforcement and ended up taking a job at the jail. He added that in Texas, one can begin working in a jail at the age of 18 but cannot become a peace officer until they are 21 years old.
Norman portrayed Bias as a "family-oriented individual" and mentioned that he had recently become an uncle a week prior to his murder.
"Norman stated that his sister's baby was a week old, and he was able to see the baby the day it was born. He loved what he did, and the people around him loved him. Law enforcement was a career path he loved."
The murder investigation has been handed over to the Texas Rangers, and Thompson was arraigned with a bond of $2 million.
