A decade after the murder of Brittanee Drexel during her spring break in South Carolina, the girlfriend of the killer makes a startling confession.
A 17-year-old named Drexel from Rochester, New York disappeared during a spring break trip to Myrtle Beach in April 2009.
The girlfriend of the South Carolina murderer who abducted, assaulted, and killed a teenager during spring break in Myrtle Beach in 2009 has confessed to lying to the FBI.
On Monday, court documents revealed that Angel Vause, the girlfriend of convicted Brittanee Drexel murderer Raymond Moody, admitted to making three false statements, including lying to a government agency.
In 2022, Vause, 56, informed the FBI that Drexel had possession of her own cellphone, but in reality, Vause took Drexel's cellphone and traveled away with it, disposing of it between Georgetown and Charleston, South Carolina, according to a complaint filed in March.
She falsely claimed to the FBI that Drexel had willingly joined her and Moody for drug use, but in reality, Drexel was kidnapped against his will.
In May 2022, the remains of Drexel, a 17-year-old from Rochester, New York, were found after she went missing during a spring break trip to a popular vacation town in April 2009.
On April 25, 2009, surveillance footage from the hotel Drexel was staying at on Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach showed her leaving in the evening to meet a friend at the nearby Blue Water Resort, which was the last time anyone other than Moody saw the teenager.
At 9 p.m., Drexel was walking alone in Myrtle Beach when Moody approached her while driving a Ford Explorer and kidnapped her in his vehicle. He then transported the teenager to a remote campsite near his home at the Sunset Motor Lodge in Georgetown, where he held her against her will, tortured and killed her, according to court documents filed in South Carolina state.
Drexel's family remained clueless about her fate for 13 years until her remains were discovered in the North Santee River in 2022.
On Monday, Dawn Pleckan Conley, Drexel's mother, stated to reporters that she believes the guilty plea is a resolution to the incident and that she will pay dearly for her actions against Drexel, as reported by WMBF News.
John Kahyaoglu, Drexel's father, found "some happiness" in Vause's plea.
"Kahyaoglu expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating that he was relieved to hear that she wouldn't simply leave without any consequences. Many individuals had invested a lot of time and effort into this case, and they had been eagerly anticipating this day. Although Kahyaoglu was excited about the upcoming sentencing, he acknowledged that it had been a long and arduous journey."
In October 2022, Moody, who is now 64 years old, confessed to kidnapping, raping, and murdering the teenager.
In the Georgetown County courthouse, Moody admitted to serving 20 years and being a monster before and after taking Brittanee Drexel's life.
Vause admitted guilt in a deal with federal authorities and could receive up to five years imprisonment for each of her three offenses.
