A DC police officer with years of experience passed away while on duty on Wednesday evening.
The police spokesman stated that Wayne was a true hero to the District of Columbia.
A police officer who spent over 25 years removing guns from the streets of Washington, D.C., passed away on Wednesday due to an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound while trying to retrieve a weapon from a storm drain after a suspect chase.
On Wednesday, MPD Executive Assistant Chief Jeff Carroll announced the death of Investigator Wayne David of the District's Metropolitan Police Department, who had been treated at MedStar Washington Hospital Center before passing away from his injuries.
Carroll announced the passing of Investigator Wayne David, who was assigned to our Violent Crimes Suppression Division, with a very heavy heart.
"In the District of Columbia, Wayne was a true hero who gave his life to serve both visitors and residents. His sacrifice will never be forgotten."
A suspect allegedly discarded a firearm during a pursuit on Interstate 295, and the gun struck David Wayne in the upper body when he tried to retrieve it, according to the MPD.
He was assisted by fellow officers at the scene and then transported to the hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival.
David was highly respected and dedicated, making him the epitome of a great officer, as stated by MPD Chief Pamela Smith.
A foot chase ensued when an officer attempted to pull over a suspect who jumped out of a vehicle on Quarles Street, according to police.
The suspect leaped from the Douglass Street NE and Kenilworth Avenue Service Road to Interstate-295 southbound. Upon landing, the suspect discarded the firearm into a storm drain, according to police.
A black male with long locks, who was described as the suspect, escaped the area on a motorcycle.
David accidentally shot himself while recovering the firearm and later died after being transported by helicopter to the local hospital.
The suspect remains under investigation, and the police are seeking information to find them.
Since 2017, David has been a member of the MPD's Violent Crimes Suppression Unit and has played a significant role in recovering hundreds of guns.
Before receiving the news that David had died, members of the police force had already gathered outside the hospital. He was a beloved mentor and well-respected figure among them, as reported by Fox5DC.
"This loss is deeply tragic for our department and community, as Carroll stated. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family during this challenging period."
David's daughter, son, and girlfriend are left behind after his death. Carroll stated that the death is being considered a line-of-duty death, and MPD promises to pay tribute to his legacy through ceremonies.
