A Connecticut cop who punched a motorist during a road rage incident will retain their job.
Thomas Brocuglio was struck by Meriden Police Cpl. Allen Ganter following a dispute on Dec. 8 at a red light.
A Connecticut police officer who was caught on camera punching a motorist who honked at him was suspended for five days and charged with assault but has been allowed to keep his job.
A dashcam video obtained by WTIC-TV, FOX 61, through a freedom of information request shows Meriden Police Cpl. Allen Ganter punching the driver in the face through the driver's side window of his car after the two argued on Dec. 8.
At the time, the officer was not on duty, not wearing a uniform, and driving his own car.
The argument started when Thomas Brocuglio honked his horn because the officer didn't turn right at a red light.
Ganter emerged from his vehicle, approached Brocuglio's window, presented his badge, and contended that making a right turn on red was prohibited at the intersection in Rocky Hill, despite the absence of a sign indicating so.
A dashcam video from Brocuglio's work vehicle reveals Ganter threatening to give Brocuglio a ticket. Brocuglio claims Ganter was distracted on his phone and demands his badge number, only for Ganter to punch him.
Brocuglio states that you will be arrested for assaulting a civilian.
Ganter was accused of third-degree assault and breach of peace, and was put on probation. He will appear in court again in January.
Meriden Police suspended Ganter for five days without pay and mandated him to attend three years of de-escalation training after he violated the department's rules of conduct. Additionally, he was removed as a school resource officer from a local middle school.
A phone number listed under Ganter's name was contacted by the Associated Press for a comment.
According to an internal affairs investigative report sent by Meriden Police to the AP, Ganter fully admitted to his actions.
He admitted to the investigating officer that it was a moment of sheer foolishness on his part, as stated in the report.
