A boater who went missing in the Colorado River was found dead, making it the 16th fatality at Grand Canyon National Park this year.
A man in his 70s vanished during a solo boating excursion on the Colorado River.
In Grand Canyon National Park, the body of a missing boater was found on Tuesday, resulting in the eighth death in the park in less than a month and the 16th fatality this year.
A 71-year-old man is believed to have disappeared while on a private boat trip near Lower Nankoweap Camp along the Colorado River, according to the National Park Service.
On Monday evening, the man's group contacted the park's communications center and informed them that he was missing.
A helicopter was used by park rangers on Tuesday to locate the body, which was approximately 10 miles downstream.
The man’s name and hometown weren't immediately released.
The death is being investigated by both the National Park Service and the Coconino County medical examiner's office.
Investigations are ongoing into the death of Patrick Horton, a 59-year-old resident of Salida, Colorado, who was found dead on the tenth day of a non-commercial river trip along the Colorado River over the weekend.
The boater found in Horton is believed to be the seventh person to die in the park in less than a month, while the death of the missing boater is the 16th fatality at the popular tourist destination this year.
In 2023, 11 fatalities were reported by park officials, which is higher than the usual range of 10 to 15 deaths per year.
Last month, a 60-year-old man from North Carolina died on a solo backpacking trip near a remote trail along the Colorado River, an 80-year-old man fell from a boat into the river near Fossil Rapid while on a commercial river trip, and a 33-year-old woman was swept away by a flash flood while hiking and found dead that day.
On August 8, a 20-year-old woman from New Mexico was discovered beneath Twin Overlooks. On the same day, a 43-year-old man from Missouri died while attempting a prohibited BASE jump from Yavapai Point. Additionally, on July 31, a 20-year-old man from North Carolina fell to his death at the South Rim.
