A bizarre crime spree by a mugger targeting specific victims has led the police to search for the suspect, who has been dubbed the "Haggler After Midnight."
A mugger in NYC has attacked nearly a dozen victims and forced them to negotiate at knifepoint over the items they would surrender, according to police.
The "Haggler After Midnight" is a moped-riding, knife-wielding robber that the New York Police Department is currently hunting. This robber is known for his peculiar mugging approach, and his holdups have become increasingly brazen and violent.
Police said that the suspect has been targeting 11 victims in Brooklyn and Queens since early November, mainly Hispanic men aged 20 to 40 who were on their way home from work in the early hours of the morning.
The mugger communicates in both English and Spanish, as stated by Deputy Chief John Mastronardi of the department's Crimes against Persons Unit to WNBC.
"He's got a peculiar method of operation - he enjoys negotiating with his victims, earning him the nickname 'Haggler After Midnight.'"
The mugger targeted cash and electronics in each of the incidents that started on Nov. 7. He used a blue or dark-colored motorized scooter to approach the victims, threatened them with a knife, and stole their jewelry, phones, and other valuables.
The NYPD reported that the mugger would sometimes ask his victims questions to assess their size, such as asking for directions or inquiring about their occupation.
Mastronardi stated that his most recent attack on Dec. 10 was his most audacious to date.
The detective stated that in the recent incident, a male victim was threatened with a knife to his throat by an assailant.
Thus far, none of the suspect's victims have been injured.
A cash reward is being offered by Crime Stoppers for any information that results in the man's apprehension.
