An investigation has been initiated by the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado following the discovery of a 19-year-old cadet dead in her dorm room this week.
On Wednesday night, 19-year-old Cadet 4th Class Avery Koonce, from Taylor, Texas, was discovered unconscious in her dormitory. Despite life-saving efforts by first responders, Koonce's condition proved fatal. Koonce was set to graduate in 2028 and was a member of the women's track and field team.
"Lt Gen Tony Bauernfeind, Academy Superintendent, stated that we lost an incredible teammate, Avery, who positively impacted her unit, intercollegiate team, and class despite being with us for a short time. Our team is currently providing support to Avery's family, Cadet Squadron 38, the Track and Field team, and the entire Academy family."
The Academy wished for Avery to rest forever in peace with blue skies and tailwinds.
According to the Austin American-Statesman, Koonce was the president of the student council and leader of the National Honor Society at Thrall High School, as stated by the district's superintendent.
"Superintendent Tommy Hooker praised the student, stating, "She embodied our high school's ideal. She was a well-rounded student who our community admired. We are deeply saddened by her loss.""
U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions, who nominated Koonce to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy, expressed his sadness over the loss of Cadet Koonce.
Cadet Koonce was a remarkable leader and her loss is felt by her community in Texas and fellow USAFA Cadets, as Sessions added.
