Tua Tagovailoa, a dolphin, has been placed on the injured reserve list and will not be able to return until Week 8.
Neurologists consulted with Tagovailoa while dolphins allowed him to work through the NFL's concussion protocol.
Tua Tagovailoa, the Miami Dolphins' quarterback, has been placed on the injured reserve after suffering a concussion against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday, which means he will be out for at least the next four games.
Miami has an early bye in Week 6, allowing the earliest possible return of Tagovailoa to the field to be in Week 8, when the Dolphins play the Arizona Cardinals on Oct. 27.
According to NFL Network, this decision will enable Tagovailoa to proceed through the NFL's concussion protocol while consulting with external neurologists for possible treatment and advice.
Despite many calling for him to retire, Tagovailoa has no plans to hang up his cleats for good, according to the NFL Network.
The left-handed gunslinger suffered a concussion after colliding with Bills safety Damar Hamlin in the red zone, resulting in a hard fall after picking up a first down.
Tagovailoa's hand appeared to be raised up and his fingers began to twitch in a scary scene. Despite walking off on his own power into the locker room, it took six minutes for the Dolphins to determine that Tagovailoa was dealing with yet another concussion.
In 2022, Tagovailoa suffered three concussions while playing every game of the 2023 season. After a terrible scene on "Thursday Night Football," where he was placed on a stretcher after being thrashed to the ground for a sack, calls for him to retire came.
In this situation, Tagovailoa's hands were positioned similarly, which could indicate unconsciousness resulting from a head injury.
The Dolphins claimed that Tagovailoa's back injury was the cause of his wobbling during an attempt to jog after the play, which occurred days after he slammed his head on the turf at Hard Rock Stadium against the Bills.
In 2022, Tagovailoa returned to playing center for the Dolphins after being absent for two weeks. He played in every game until Week 16, when he suffered another concussion on a tackle from behind. This injury forced him to miss the rest of the season, and he faced a lot of speculation about his future in football during the offseason.
Miami is allowing Tagovailoa to go through concussion protocol and take as much time as needed before returning to the field, as four games is the bare minimum for him to miss.
The Dolphins signed former Pro Bowl quarterback Scoop Huntley off the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad to replace him on the roster. However, Skylar Thompson, who replaced Tagovailoa following his injury on Thursday, is scheduled to start for Miami against the Seattle Seahawks this week.
