Coach DeMeco Ryans confirms that Texans' Joe Mixon was definitely injured by the banned hip-drop tackle.
Mixon's status for Week 3 was not specified by DeMarco Ryans.
DeMeco Ryans, the coach of the Houston Texans, wanted to review the footage before making a decision on the controversial tackle that caused Joe Mixon to get injured during Sunday's win over the Chicago Bears.
His take on Monday? It was the banned hip-drop tackle.
During the third quarter of Sunday's victory, T.J. Edwards of the Bears illegally tackled Mixon, resulting in an ankle injury for Mixon. He briefly returned to the field before leaving the game early.
On Monday, Ryan confirmed that he saw a hip-drop tackle during the game, which he initially described as "rolled up" on Mixon.
"According to Ryans, the hip-drop tackle occurs when the defender unweights himself and places all of his weight on the runner's legs. This tackle is considered dangerous and is why it is being phased out of the game. Although the hip-drop tackle doesn't happen often, the percentage of injury when it does occur is high, as seen with Joe's ankle injury and the defender landing on his ankle."
In the spring, NFL owners voted to prohibit the hip-drop tackle due to safety concerns. According to NFL executive Jeff Miller, the tackle was employed 230 times last season and led to 15 players being sidelined with injuries.
If a defender employs the forbidden move, it will lead to a 15-yard personal foul penalty or fines if it is not flagged during the game.
When asked if Mixon's injury could be "short term," Ryans did not provide details on the extent of the injury.
"He replied, "We'll assess Joe's progress on a daily basis and make decisions as needed throughout the week.""
