Derrick White, a USA Basketball gold medalist, was injured during a fight at a Colorado-Colorado State rivalry game.
An alumnus of the Buffaloes was hindered from facing off against his assailant.
Derrick White, a Boston Celtics guard and Team USA Basketball Olympic gold medalist, was involved in a fight during the Colorado-Colorado State football rivalry game on Saturday.
A video from TMZ Sports shows White, a Colorado Buffaloes alumnus and Parker, Colorado, native, confronting a man in the stands behind one of the goal posts at Colorado State.
The man in the front row, wearing a Colorado State Rams hat, swung at White with a closed fist, hitting him in the head and knocking him backwards.
The Celtics guard tried to retaliate against the man who attacked him, but several other men intervened and pushed the attacker away.
The gold medalist was restrained by a man who appeared to be his friend while he attempted to engage in the competition.
Another scene from the confrontation depicted White aiding another man in standing up, and during their dialogue, the man exclaimed, "I was merely attempting to assist you."
After the altercation, it is unclear if security or law enforcement intervened.
White, who won an NBA title with the Celtics and helped Team USA win gold in Paris, attended a previous Buffaloes game to support his alma mater. White played at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs from 2012-2015 before transferring to the University of Colorado-Boulder from 2016-2017.
In the 2017 NBA Draft, the San Antonio Spurs selected White as a first-round pick.
During the 2021-2022 season, White was traded from the Spurs to the Celtics midseason, but he has been a crucial player for them as a reserve.
In the NBA playoffs this season, White was a valuable asset for Boston as he averaged 16.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.1 assists while shooting 40.4% from beyond the arc. His exceptional shooting skills and outstanding defensive abilities made him a valuable asset for the team.
