Jordan Chiles seeks justice in Swiss federal court over bronze medal fight.
Bronze medal taken away from Chiles
The bronze medal scandal has overshadowed the Games, and now American Olympic gymnastics star Jordan Chiles and her legal team have filed an appeal with the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland.
At the Paris Games, Chiles initially finished in fifth place in the floor exercise routine. However, her coaches filed a score inquiry, and she was later elevated to third place. However, Romanian officials appealed the decision to the Center of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which overturned Chiles' score and stripped her of a medal.
Now, Chiles and her lawyers are going to a higher court.
According to Olympics.com, Chiles' lawyers stated that the Supreme Court should rule that the CAS decision was procedurally flawed for two reasons.
CAS violated Chiles' fundamental "right to be heard" by refusing to consider the video evidence that showed her inquiry was submitted on time, which contradicted the findings in CAS' decision.
The CAS proceeding was unfair to Chiles because the panel president, Hamid G. Gharavi, had a conflict of interest. Gharavi had been representing Romania for almost a decade and was actively involved in the country's case at the time of the arbitration.
"The USOPC filed a letter supporting Chiles' appeal today."
USA Gymnastics is collaborating closely with Chiles and her team in the pursuit of justice for Jordan.
This week, during a panel at the Forbes Power Women's Summit 2024 on Wednesday, chiles gave her first sit-down interview about the incident and visibly choked up when asked about the topic.
"For me, the events that have transpired are not just about the medal, but rather my skin color," Chiles said, wiping away tears.
Chiles previously stated that she was subjected to "racially motivated attacks" on social media on Aug. 15. The bronze medal win by Chiles marked the first time in Olympic history that a gymnastics podium featured three Black athletes.
"The journey to becoming an athlete has been a series of events that have led me to this point, and I feel like I've lost everything."
