Trump's protective perimeter must be expanded, says Dem rep: 'Unacceptable'
Congressman Ro Khanna proposes inviting Secret Service to Congress to vote on expanding former President Donald Trump's security zone.
On Sunday, a Democratic congressman called for the U.S. Secret Service to increase security measures around former President Donald Trump after a second assassination attempt.
"Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., wrote that two assassination attempts on a former President & the Republican nominee in 60 days is unacceptable. He urged the Secret Service to come to Congress tomorrow, disclose the resources needed to expand the protective perimeter, and let them allocate it in a bipartisan vote the same day."
The acting director of the Secret Service briefed Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., on the quick response they took to ensure former President Trump's safety.
""Any form of political violence has no place in this country, and the perpetrator must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," Schumer wrote."
In a social media post, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., seemed to allude to the assassination attempt on Trump.
"A democratic society should not tolerate political violence," Jeffries stated.
Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, a Florida Democrat running against Republican Sen. Rick Scott for his seat in the upper chamber, also appeared to allude to the assassination attempt with a broader message.
"Political violence and gun violence have no place in our society," she wrote on X.
On Sunday, Scott, a Trump 2024 campaign surrogate, spoke with Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw about the assassination attempt.
Scott wrote that the dangerous vile rhetoric toward Trump must stop and God bless our law enforcement.
On Sunday, the FBI announced that there was evidence suggesting another assassination attempt on Trump occurred at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, only nine weeks after the July 13 attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Agents of the U.S. Secret Service observed an AK-style rifle protruding from the shrubbery near the golf course where Trump was playing, about 400 yards away.
The gunman fled in an SUV after dropping the rifle and two backpacks, including a scope and a GoPro camera, following the firing of an agent, according to Bradshaw. The suspect was later apprehended by law enforcement in a neighboring county. The incident has raised new concerns about the effectiveness of Secret Service protective operations in light of the agency's admission of failure to prevent the assassination attempt this summer.
According to Sheriff William Snyder, the man who was detained displayed a tranquil and unemotional demeanor when he was stopped.
"Obviously, law enforcement with long rifles, blue lights, a lot going on. He never questioned it," Snyder said.
""I wanted to assure my supporters that I am safe and well, despite rumors spreading about gunshots in my vicinity. Nothing will stop me, and I will never surrender!" Trump wrote in an email."
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava expressed her horror at the attempted attack on former President Trump in West Palm Beach and expressed gratitude that he is unharmed. She stated that such violence goes against everything Americans stand for.
