The House committee intensifies its efforts to acquire crucial documents regarding Harris's part in the border crisis.
Last month, Chairman James Comer sent a letter to CBP, yet he has not received a reply.
The House committee is intensifying its efforts to obtain information from the Biden administration regarding Vice President Harris' role in the ongoing border crisis.
James Comer, R-Ky., the House Oversight Committee Chair, wrote to Troy Miller, the acting Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner, to follow up on a request for documents and communications between Harris' office and CBP from last month.
Vice President Harris's role as the border czar in the ongoing border crisis must be understood by the Committee and the American people, according to Comer, as stated in a letter obtained by Planet Chronicle Digital.
"The illegal entry and release of illegal aliens into the United States under the Biden-Harris Administration have led to numerous murders, sexual assaults, and serious bodily injuries committed against Americans by illegal aliens. These crimes should never have occurred."
Recently, illegal immigrants have been accused of committing several crimes, including a rape in New York City and a crime by an MS-13 gang member.
Comer reiterated the request on Aug. 20 and Sept. 6, and the committee set an Oct. 1 deadline. If the request is not met, Comer threatens additional action.
If CBP continues to withhold documents and communications on this matter, the Committee may resort to alternative measures to obtain this information, such as through the compulsory process, says the official.
The ongoing debate about who is responsible for the border crisis has led to a fight over the documents, with Republicans arguing that the crisis was caused by the Biden-Harris administration's policies and that the administration's "open borders" policies are the root cause.
The White House rejected the title "border czar" for Harris, who was tasked with addressing the "root causes" of migration in 2021.
The Biden administration claims that it is facing a historic crisis across the hemisphere that requires additional funding and immigration reform from Congress to repair a "broken" system. It has highlighted a significant decline in numbers since Biden signed an executive order restricting arrivals in June.
Since then, there has been a more than 50% decrease in encounters, including August encounters that were 68% lower than August 2023.
Harris has been critical of Trump for not supporting bipartisan legislation that conservatives say would regularize high numbers, but supporters say would increase funding to the border and limit entries into the U.S.
In the past year, Joe and I managed to unite Democrats and conservative Republicans in writing a robust border bill. The Border Patrol supported it. However, Donald Trump believes that a border agreement would harm his campaign, so he instructed his congressional allies to sabotage the deal. Despite this, I am committed to prioritizing our security and pledge to you as president that I will revive the bipartisan border security bill that he killed and enact it into law.
A spokesperson for the vice president stated that Republicans are still impeding a bipartisan border security measure backed by the Biden-Harris Administration and a coalition of senators.
"President Biden and Vice President Harris are taking action to secure the border, while congressional Republicans are using the issue for political gain."
