Republican senators are calling for the Secret Service to boost former President Donald Trump's security after a second assassination attempt in two months.
On Tuesday, Sens. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., and Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., wrote a letter to Acting Director Ronald Rowe requesting additional protective resources for the USSS detail assigned to President Trump, including increased staffing capabilities to secure a wider perimeter.
On Sunday, the second assassination attempt occurred at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, while the former president was playing golf. The suspect, Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was arrested for allegedly pushing the barrel of an AK-47 through the chain-link fence surrounding the course.
After the suspect raised a firearm, the Secret Service opened fire, prompting Routh to flee in a black Nissan before being apprehended.
Six senators, including Sens. James Risch, Mike Lee, Marco Rubio, Bill Cassidy, Rick Scott, and Bill Hagerty, joined Marshall and Tuberville in requesting that Rowe and the Secret Service designate President Trump as a protectee with the same level of protective resources as a sitting president.
The USSS requested a briefing to Congress and staff on the threats against President Trump's life, the current threat environment, and how they will continue to execute their mission successfully.
The acting director was requested by several individuals to provide answers to specific questions within 10 days, including details about the protective resources allocated after the July 13 assassination attempt and the measures taken by the USSS to improve Trump's security.
In July, after the first attack, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas made a statement indicating that there had been "significant physical and technical enhancements."
This week, President Biden stated that he had instructed his administration to provide the Secret Service with all the resources, capabilities, and protective measures necessary to ensure the safety of the former president.
How will the USSS allocate additional protective resources for President Trump and what measures will they take to ensure his safety?
Planet Chronicle Digital did not receive an immediate comment from the DHS and Secret Service.
