Republicans will maintain the filibuster with McConnell leading the charge in the Senate.
In the 2024 elections, the Republican Party secured a majority in the Senate.
If Republicans win the Senate majority in the 2024 election, the filibuster will remain intact, according to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Even with a slim majority of Senate seats, the other party can still hinder legislation's progress due to the substantial hurdle needed to surmount the filibuster.
The Senate reduced the number of votes required for cloture from two-thirds of senators voting to three-fifths of all senators duly chosen and sworn, or 60 of the 100-member Senate in 1975, according to senate.gov.
The "end of the filibuster" movement abruptly ended ten minutes ago. In the morning, the rights of the minority will be championed by Washington.
"In our moment of triumph, Republicans will safeguard the rights of Democrats to obstruct policies they disagree with, as Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., stated in a tweet. Take note, @CNN, when you accuse us of fascism and the demise of democracy."
Some Democrats have voiced their support for abolishing the filibuster in order to expedite the passage of their priorities.
In 2022, Democratic Rep. Cori Bush of Missouri tweeted: "Eliminate the filibuster, enshrine Roe v. Wade, increase the size of the Supreme Court, and do whatever it takes to safeguard reproductive rights. This is an urgent matter."
Kamala Harris urged the elimination of the filibuster to pass "reproductive freedom protections."
McConnell believes the filibuster is secure, but he won't be leading the Senate GOP for much longer.
Earlier this year, he declared that he would not seek another term as the Senate Republican leader.
