Matt Gaetz resigns from Congress after being named Trump's attorney general nominee, Johnson confirms.
Johnson stated that he believed the resignation letter was issued out of respect for us, and it took effect immediately.
On Wednesday, Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., announced that Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., had resigned from the House of Representatives.
On the same day that President-elect Trump appointed him to be his Attorney General, Gaetz submitted his resignation notice to House GOP leaders.
"Johnson stated that he believed the resignation letter was issued out of respect for us. Although it caught us off guard, I inquired about the reasoning behind it, and he replied that too many absences were not allowed."
According to the speaker, Florida state law allows the governor to fill a House vacancy within an eight-week timeframe, potentially enabling the seat to be filled as early as January 3rd.
Johnson stated that he has already communicated with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis regarding the issue.
