Gaetz's pick is criticized by Fetterman as "a god-tier kind of trolling to trigger a meltdown."
The confirmation process may face opposition from the GOP Senate for the nomination.
Rep. Matt Gaetz was described by U.S. Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., as a "God tier kind of trolling" for being chosen by President-elect Trump to serve as his next attorney general.
Fetterman recognized that some of Trump's selections were commendable, but he did not include Gaetz in that assessment.
"He said that the Dems' opinions on Gaetz are not what's interesting, and that the real action will come from his GOP colleagues on how they can justify voting for that jerkoff."
Fetterman said that Trump's nominations of Sen. Marco Rubio and Rep. Elise Stefanik were serious picks, aside from Gaetz.
Additionally, it was pointed out that Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., previously served as the attorney general of Missouri before being elected to Congress.
"Fetterman criticized Gaetz's selection as a troll, stating that he would have been a solid pick. He added that the interesting answers would come from his GOP colleagues who would vote or justify voting for Gaetz."
Gaetz could face an uphill battle to get confirmed by the Senate.
"A Republican senator, granted anonymity, told Planet Chronicle Digital that he will never be confirmed. Another Senate Republican source said, "It won't happen.""
Gaetz resigned from the House of Representatives Wednesday after Trump announced his nomination.
The Ethics Committee of the House is currently probing Gaetz regarding accusations of sexual misconduct, drug use, and receiving inappropriate gifts.
Rep. Michael Guest, R-Miss., who chairs the Ethics Committee, stated that "once a member is no longer a member of Congress, ethics has no jurisdiction. Therefore, if Matt Gaetz were to be appointed as the attorney general, the ongoing ethics investigation would cease at that point."
The DOJ was also investigating Gaetz for years in a sex trafficking case.
The DOJ concluded that Gaetz would not be charged with any crimes after ending its investigation of his office last year.
Elizabeth Elkind, Julia Johnson, and Kelly Phares of Planet Chronicle Digital collaborated on the report.
