Trump predicts Thune will excel as Senate majority leader.
Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., was congratulated by President-elect Donald Trump after being elected to serve as the next Senate Republican leader.
Republicans won the majority in the House and Senate during the 2024 elections.
"Senator John Thune has been elected as the new Senate Majority Leader, and Trump believes he will excel in his role due to his quick pace," according to a post on Truth Social.
Both Rick Scott of Florida and John Cornyn of Texas were also contenders for the position.
"Although it was not the outcome we desired, I will do everything in my power to ensure John Thune's success in achieving President Trump's agenda," Scott stated.
Cornyn stated that he and his colleagues are ready to implement President Trump's agenda on the first day and are excited to collaborate to seize the opportunities that will arise in the upcoming year to confirm nominees, tackle the national debt, extend the Trump tax cuts, and reverse the Biden-Harris administration's disastrous border policies.
Next year, Sen. John Thune will replace Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., as the Senate Republican Leader, as McConnell did not seek re-election to the position.
Trump expressed his anticipation of collaborating with Thune and other newly appointed Senate Republican leaders.
"I am excited to collaborate with Senators John Barrasso, Tom Cotton, Shelley Moore Capito, James Lankford, and Tim Scott to Make America Great Again!" he stated in the post.
During his remarks on Wednesday, Thune stated that Republican senators will collaborate with House members to execute Trump's agenda.
