How JD Vance's Senate seat will be filled as VP-elect
Earlier this year, Vivek Ramaswamy told Planet Chronicle Digital that he would consider serving in the Senate seat if asked.
As Sen. JD Vance prepares to assume the position of vice president, Ohioans must find a new senator to replace him.
According to Ohio law, there will be a special election to fill the remainder of Vance's Senate term after Ohio's governor initially fills the void caused by Vance vacating the seat.
According to Ohio law, the appointee will remain in office until the fifteenth day of December following the next regular state election that takes place more than one hundred eighty days after the vacancy occurs.
According to Ohio law, a special election will be held to fill the vacancy at the next regular state election, unless the unexpired term ends within one year immediately following the date of the regular election, in which case no election will be held and the appointment will be for the unexpired term.
The seat should remain in Republican hands since Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, a Republican, will select Vance's temporary replacement.
A special election will be held in November 2026, according to cincinnati.com.
Vance began his Senate term in 2023 and will continue until early 2029.
In the midst of the celebration, Vance declared, "Following the most remarkable political resurgence in American history, we will spearhead the most impressive economic revival in American history, under the guidance of Donald Trump."
If asked, entrepreneur and author Vivek Ramaswamy would consider serving in the Senate.
In 2023, Ramaswamy ran for the GOP presidential nomination but later dropped out in early 2024 and endorsed Trump.
The Senate will be under Republican control in the 2024 elections, according to the Planet Chronicle Decision Desk's projection.
