Former Ohio Governor Bob Taft to Support Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown
William Howard Taft's great-grandson is Taft.
In the 2024 U.S. Senate race in Ohio, former Gov. Bob Taft, a conservative, announced his intention to vote for incumbent Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown.
Taft, who served as governor from 1999 to 2007, is the great-grandson of the late President William Howard Taft, who, after his presidency, became the first person to hold both the office of president and chief justice of the Supreme Court.
Taft, a lifelong Republican, has always run for office under the GOP banner and is a conservative. However, he is breaking from tradition this year in Ohio's U.S. Senate race by supporting Sherrod Brown.
He stated that by making this decision, he would be aligning with the majority of voters who evaluate candidates not only based on their political affiliation but primarily on their character, experience, and expertise.
Sherrod Brown has been an effective advocate for Ohioans in the U.S. Senate, and Taft believes that he is the right person to continue this role.
Since 2007, Brown has been serving in the Senate, but now faces opposition from Republican candidate Bernie Moreno.
Brown acknowledged the endorsement on social media, stating, "Bob Taft is the only person to defeat me in an election. Although we have different political views, I appreciate his support in this campaign."
Taft defeated Brown in the 1990 Ohio secretary of state contest.
In the 2024 presidential race, J.D. Vance, Ohio's other U.S. Senator, is Donald Trump's potential running mate.
